Build-a-Boat Program

If you've always wanted to build your own boat but don't know how to start, or don't have the proper tools or a large enough workshop, we can help.

Unlike other schools where the group works together to build one boat and one lucky student wins the right to take it home, every one of the participants in our Build-a-Boat Program will leave with their own handcrafted boat.

Some students may take longer than others to build a boat due to skill level and schedules, however, we will see to it that your boat will leave the shop completely finished and ready to be launched!

No matter how long it takes, we will always be on-hand to provide advice, guidance and support. We want you to enjoy the process and know you'll be proud of your achievement.

We encourage students to honestly discuss with us their skill level, tool experience and ultimately, what they would like to achieve. We can then advise on design, plans, materials, tools and time requirements.

It is important to set realistic expectations and to possibly be prepared to build a smaller vessel than you might first think of. We have been doing this work for years and we know the traps and pitfals and have experienced the despair of students taking on more than they can comfortably manage. There is nothing worse than seeing a half completed vessel, abandoned due to either financial, time or skill constraints. We want you to leave our program inspired, enthused and with a completed boat.

We offer a wide selection of smal boats in our Build-A-Boat Program, including a wide variety of dinghies, cedar strip canoes and kayaks. The Shellback is one of the favorite boats in our program with a typical construction time of about 150 hours.

Our Build-a-Boat Program runs continuously in our workshop.  Please e-mail for availability.
